Par for Pie

Today I joined my team on a team outing to the Alamo City’s Willow Springs Municipal Golf Course here in San Antonio and then followed it up with a trip to the famous Big Lou’s Pizza for a 42” pizza split 15 ways with beer, water, soda and plenty of appetizers to go around.  It was truly an outing to remember especially considering the last time I think I actually played golf was 10 years ago and it wasn’t really golf.  It was my college buddies getting together on the school’s golf course to down 2 30 packs of Bud Light and then try to steer a golf cart around an 18 hole course while occasionally hitting some balls.  That was 10 years ago and I’ve sobered up since then… man those were some interesting years I’ll never remember.

Anyway, back to today’s outing… I was promoted to a Linux Systems Engineer position some months back but I was invited to join my former systems admin team on their outing today to play a 9 hole course and join them for some pizza and beer at one of Texas’ best pizzerias according to multiple sources.  Having never heard of the joint I must say I was pleasantly surprised and look forward to visiting there again.

The golf course was great with lots of challenges yet still very mild and manageable.  Follow a few basic courtesy rules no matter your skill level and your generally fine.  Golf, I’m told is a gentlemen’s game but with 15 uncouth IT administrators where only 4-5 have their own golf clubs (myself NOT included) it becomes more of a calculated comedy to see how many times one can swing and miss and then apply BASH scripting syntax to the game.  For instance, when ball not in hole; hit ball in hole.  Add logic and begin strace as required.

I’d say by the 7th hole those of us who had never thought of swinging a club and those who had done so in the distant past though not sober were able to at least make some measure of consistent contact with the ball.  We’ll leave the topic of distance, loft and direction for another day.  Taking the advice of a friend, at this point we’ll simply label the holes with smiley faces and frowny faces.

…For me, it was all smiles thanks to the wonderful company of great friends.  I don’t think it could have gotten any better than that.
